Light into the shadows
Sans soleil was an almost transcendental experience for me. It was
seven years ago when I heard the name Chris Marker for the first time. A
documentary about his filmography put his name into my mind and made me look
for some of his works in DVD. I found a boxset which included the films La jetée (1962), Le souvenir d’un avenir (2001), Sans
soleil (1982) and Le tombeau d’Alexandre
(1993). It also included an essay in images by Isaki Lacuesta and Sergi
Dies called Las variaciones Marker / The
Marker variations and the marvellous film Schastie from 1934 directed by Aleksandr Ivánovich Medvedkin, known also with the title Happiness. In that film, a wife says to
his husband to go away in search of happiness and not to return until he finds
it, and I didn’t find my happiness in the filmography of Chris Marker but a way
to enjoy it.
His real name
was Christian François Bouche-Villeneuve and he was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine,
France, in 1921 and developed an artistic career as a writer, photographer and
filmmaker. His first films were born in the fifties, envolved by the atmosphere
of la rive gauche along with Alain
Resnais, Agnès Varda and others, and exploring the boundaries of the documentary
language. He directed along with Alain Resnais his first important film called Les
status meurent aussi (1953) about
the fate of African art in the European commercial market.
After experimenting with fiction collaborating again with Resnais in
the film Nuit et brouillard (1955) and the creation of the animated film
Les Astronautes (1959) along with Walerian Borowczykand in which they combined
traditional drawings with photograph stills, he continued working on his own
documentaries like Dimanche à Pekin (1956) and ¡Cuba sí! (1961) expressing
his political experiences through his trips along different revolutionary
societies.
In 1962 he filmed La jetée, probably his most influential work.
In fact, La jetée is not a film but a photographic narration, a
fictional photographic story to be exact. It’s a science fiction story about a
man prisoner of researchers of time travel in the aftermath of the Third World
War. Edited as a photomontage in black and white and narrated by Jean Négroni, the cast included Hélène
Chatelain, Davos Hanich and Jacques Ledoux, and the music was composed by
Trevor Duncan, it's mainly a vocal piece that shudders the viewer from the
start, expressing all the anguish suffered by the main character in an
apocalyptic Paris. That music will always remain linked to the sentence “Ceci
est l’histoire d’un home marqué par une image d’enfance”. Chris Marker had
created a masterpiece.
But my memory has his documentary Sans soleil / Sunless from
1983 as the strongest image created by Chris Marker. It was the first Marker
film I'd ever seen and he made me wonder about what could be called a
documentary. He mixed documentary images with fictional ones and excerpts from
Japanese TV programs with personal reflections about memory and the cultural
environment. Chris Marker died last 29th July but the maneki neko
still moves its arm with the music composed by the same Chris Marker, and I’m
sure it brought me a big fortune because after discovering the sun of Marker, I
began to see the cinematic art in a very different way.

Oui, je t'aime
El último Festival Couleur Café me hizo descubrir un dúo francés llamado Brigitte. Era una hermosa noche de verano en Bruselas y me preguntaba acerca de lo que iba a experimentar. Yo no conocía nada acerca de ellas, excepto uno de sus videos, pero sentí una energía muy positiva en el aire. Y acerté, porque su actuación fue muy emocionante y todo el público pareció estar a tono con ese dúo tan poderoso además de muy elegante y con un sentido del humor muy inteligente. Definitivamente, Brigitte me sedujo para siempre.
Brigitte se formó en 2008 por Sylvie Hoarau (la morena) y Aurélie Saada (la rubia). Juntas desarrollaron un estilo muy teatral en el escenario tomando el nombre de las actrices francesas Brigitte Bardot y Brigitte Lahaie. Así Brigitte es un cabaret revival como un homenaje a la chanson française y la moda de los años cincuenta y primeros sesenta.
Aurélie Saada había comenzado su carrera musical bajo el nombre Mayane Delem en 2001 a pesar de que había trabajado como actriz como miembro de Les Quiches que filmaron algunas películas cortas en un estilo de humor absurdo. Musicalmente, su primer disco en solitario fue Un monde ailleurs lanzado en 2003.
Por su lado, Sylvie Hoarau comenzó su carrera musical fundando el trío Topaze junto con Stéphane Dorey y Maume Greg en 1991. Una vez el bajista Jérôme Maklès se unió a la banda, se cambiaron el nombre por Vendetta y lanzaron su álbum de debut en 1998 bajo el título Trop sages. Finalmente, se separaron tras cinco álbumes, siendo el último Drôle d'idée (Barclay / Universal), publicado en 2004.
Así ellas cruzaron sus caminos y Brigitte surgió como una fuerza muy especial. Después de un primer EP llamado Battez-vous (2010, 3e oficina - Wagram), su álbum debut llegó como una declaración de principios. Et vous, tu m'aimes (2011, 3e oficina - Wagram) incluye dieciséis canciones co-escritas con la cantante y compositora franco-libanesa Camille Bazbaz y el trovador francés Albin de la Simone. Sus sonidos van desde las referencias orientales al hip-hop. Maravillas como Monsieur je t’aime “Impatiente, infidèle, je ne vous résiste pas. Mes verres fumés, mon vieil imper', je suis cachée, coupable, fière, echappée pour quelques heures d'une vie rangée qui me perd”nos seducen con una dulce melodía cantada con una voz sensual que nos susurra todos sus deseos. Après minuit tiene un ritmo muy funky con algunos momentos psicodélicos. “Emmène moi danser ce soir, fais moi valser, fais moi boire.Je veux me suspendre à ton cou.Je veux voir des beaux gosses à genoux”. Nosotros queremos que ellas nos hagan bailar también, y sin duda lo hacen, todo el día y toda la noche.

El darrer Festival Couleur Cafè em va fer descobrir un duo francès anomenat Brigitte. Era una bella nit d'estiu a Brussel · les i em preguntava sobre el que experimentaria. Jo no en sabia res d’elles, excepte un dels seus vídeos, però vaig sentir una energia molt a positiva l’ambient. I vaig encertar, perquè la seva actuació va ser molt emocionant i tot el públic va semblar estar a to amb aquest duo tan poderós a més de molt elegant i amb un sentit de l'humor molt intel · ligent. Definitivament, Brigitte em va seduir per sempre.
Brigitte es va formar el 2008 per Sylvie Hoarau (la morena) i Aurélie Saada (la rossa). Juntes van desenvolupar un estil molt teatral a l'escenari prenent el nom de les actrius franceses Brigitte Bardot i Brigitte Lahaie. Així Brigitte és un cabaret revival com a homenatge a la chanson française i la moda dels anys cinquanta i primers seixanta.
Aurélie Saada havia començat la seva carrera musical sota el nom Mayane Delem el 2001 tot i que havia treballat com a actriu com a membre de les Quiches que van filmar algunes pel · lícules curtes en un estil d'humor absurd. Musicalment, el seu primer disc en solitari va ser Un monde ailleurs llançat el 2003.

Mes verres fumés, mon vieil imper', je suis cachée, coupable, fière, echappée pour quelques heures d'une vie rangée qui me perd”ens sedueixen amb una dolça melodia cantada amb una veu sensual que ens xiuxiueja tots els seus desitjos. Après minuitté un ritme molt funky amb alguns moments psicodèlics. “Emmène moi danser ce soir, fais moi valser, fais moi boire.Je veux me suspendre à ton cou.Je veux voir des beaux gosses à genoux”. Nosaltres volem que elles ens facin ballar també, i sens dubte ho fan, tot el dia i tota la nit.

The last Couleur Café Festival made me discover a French duo called Brigitte. It was a beautiful summer night in Brussels and I was wondering about what I was going to experience. I knew nothing about them except for one of their videos, but I felt a kind of very positive energy in the air. And I was right because their performance was really exciting and all the audience seemed to be in tune with that duo so powerful, deeply elegant and with a very clever sense of humour. Definitely, Brigitte seduced me forever.
Brigitte was formed in 2008 by Sylvie Hoarau (the brunette) and Aurélie Saada (the blonde). They developed a very theatrical style on stage taking the name from the French actresses Brigitte Bardot and Brigitte Lahaie. So Brigitte is a revival cabaret as a homage to the chanson française and the fifties and early sixties fashion.
Aurélie Saada had started her music career under the name Mayane Delem in 2001 although she had worked as an actress being member of Les Quiches who filmed some short films in a non-sense humour style. Musically, her first solo album was Un monde ailleurs released in 2003.
Sylvie Hoarau started her music career founding the trio Topaze along with Stéphane Dorey and Greg Maume in 1991. Once the bassist Jérôme Maklès joined the band, they renamed to Vendetta and released their debut album in 1998 under the title Trop sages. Finally they separated after five albums, being the last Drôle d'idée (Barclay /Universal) released in 2004.
Once their ways crossed Brigitte emerged as a very special force. After a first EP called Battez-vous (2010, 3e bureau - Wagram), their debut album arrived as an statement of principles. Et vous, tu m’aimes (2011, 3e bureau - Wagram) includes sixteen songs co-written with Franco-Lebanese singer/songwriter Camille Bazbaz and French troubadour Albin de la Simone. Their sounds go from eastern references to hip-hop. Wonders like Monsieur je t’aime “Impatiente, infidèle, je ne vous résiste pas. Mes verres fumés, mon vieil imper', je suis cachée, coupable, fière, echappée pour quelques heures d'une vie rangée qui me perd” seduce us with a sweet melody sung in a sensual voice that whispers us all their desires. Après minuit has a very funky rhythm with some psycodelic moments. “Emmène moi danser ce soir, fais moi valser, fais moi boire.Je veux me suspendre à ton cou.Je veux voir des beaux gosses à genoux”. We want them to make us dance too, and definitely they do, all day and all night.
